Mohs Surgery vs. Traditional Excision: Pros and Cons

Mohs Surgery vs. Traditional Excision: Pros and Cons

In the past, if you had skin cancer, your only choice was invasive surgery which often left behind visible scarring. Now, you have a much less invasive treatment option, known as Mohs surgery. The dermatologists of The Dermatology Group offers Mohs surgery, as well as a full range of other medical and cosmetic dermatology services. They have several convenient office locations in Mount Dora, Longwood, Orlando, and Winter Park, FL.

How Mohs Surgery Can Help You

Let’s look at some important differences between Mohs surgery and traditional excision surgery.

Mohs surgery offers precise treatment, removing only the cancerous cells, not the surrounding skin, leaving minimal scarring behind. In contrast, traditional excision surgery often requires the removal of surrounding skin to make sure all cancerous cells have been removed, leaving larger scarred areas.

In addition to producing more aesthetically pleasing results, Mohs surgery is a more comfortable process than traditional skin excision surgery. During the Mohs surgery treatment, you'll only need a local anesthetic, as the procedure does not require general anesthesia and is typically done on an outpatient basis.

During treatment, your dermatologist or surgeon will remove a thin layer of tissue and examine it under a Mohs microscope. If cancerous cells are found, another thin layer will be removed and examined. The process continues until the remaining cancerous cells are removed and normal skin cells are found.
